Karl-Heiner Schmid of Reutlingen has 3,000 painters in his employ, a scale unique in Germany. If he weren’t already “meister” and undisputed patriarch, he might have trouble finding a job. Schmid keeps his hands jammed in his pockets, talks a blue streak, and likes to share his personal philosophy.
