Life is good

Appeared in the Frankfurter Rundschau, October 9, 2008
War has broken out again in Mindanao in the southern Philippines. This is the story of Bailyn Mandi, who got caught between the front lines.

Bailyn’s death has an audience. On a gurney at a nameless hospital just off the dusty country road that links the village of Datu Piang to the outside world, she seems to be asleep. Her arms hang down like awkward sticks, the upper arm on the left side in tatters with bones protruding from a hole swarming with flies.
