On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Around 8.5 million people subsequently fled their homeland. They reached the borders of neighboring Western countries on overcrowded trains, buses, on foot, or in cars. Many helpers welcomed the often traumatized and exhausted refugees. They could rest in reception camps behind the borders. Helpers provided them with food and clothing and brought them to safe accommodations.
