For 25 years now, our reporter community has annually awarded the Hansel Mieth Prize, one of the most important journalism awards in German print journalism. In order to continue doing so in the future, we have launched a crowdfunding campaign on the platform „Startnext“. Call started, in which we are asking for donations until July 31, 2023.
The Hansel-Mieth Prize is the only award that equally values committed reportages in text and images. Zeitenspiegel Reportagen dedicates the prize to its honorary member, photographer Johanna „Hansel“ Mieth, who passed away in 1998. „To be a good photographer,“ was her credo, „you have to feel what people feel when they are at their lowest.“ She stood for respectful yet committed reportage photography. She advocated for rights instead of handouts for the poor, took sides without romanticizing misery. In her spirit, committed text and image reportages in German-language print and online media are honored. It is awarded for the complete contribution (image and text) and is endowed with 6,000 euros.
In addition, we give out two more awards. The Gabriel Grüner Scholarship reminds of the StrictReporter Gabriel Grüner, who Strict-Photographer Volker Krämer and translator Senol Alit, who were murdered at the Dulje Pass in Kosovo on June 13, 1999. In memory of their colleagues, Zeitenspiegel promotes the production of dedicated reports in words and images. The Gabriel Grüner Scholarship supports the most compelling exposé each year with also 6,000 Euros.
Gabriel Grüner had a soft spot for journalistic talent. He was born in Mals, South Tyrol – where he is also buried. In his spirit, the Gabriel-Grüner Student Prize A reportage in words and pictures created by South Tyrolean students, intended to spark interest in journalism. The nominated students are prepared and accompanied in journalistic workshops conducted by Zeitenspiegel Reportagen.
Dozens of reporters, photographers, graphic designers, and preliminary and main jurors work on a voluntary basis, reviewing and evaluating hundreds of texts and thousands of photos. They collect donations, organize award ceremonies, and produce the yearbook featuring the award-winning contributions. They do this gladly and out of conviction. Thanks to all these helpers, we can ensure that every year we once again honor outstanding reporting teams for their commitment and journalistic integrity, facilitate the journalistic realization of important topics, and train the next generation of journalists on how to live up to the responsibility of truthful and engaged reporting.
