Ivory Coast: Storytelling tour begins

Zeitenspiegel has been training journalists in Ivory Coast in conjunction with the Peace Counts project for five years. In January those seminars became a permanent fixture with the founding of Studio-Ecole Mozaik, a radio journalism academy in Abidjan. Instruction launched in the spring, led by Tilman Wörtz of Zeitenspiegel, and a nationwide network of 40 radio stations broadcasts the students’ work.

That network is cemented each year with a road show during which radio features are presented in a storytelling format in public squares in the tradition of the West African griot - but with modern equipment and themes. This year the storytellers’ appearances will be structured as a game, with people from participating organizations contributing their own stories and an umpire calling fouls if they insult or denigrate political rivals and other ethnic groups. The shows will be recorded and broadcast by partner radio stations.

The tour receives support from the Stiftung Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Studio-Ecole Mozaik is supported by the EU and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) as well as Germany’s foreign office.
