China conversation with Spiegel correspondent Georg Fahrion

On March 15, 2026, the German-Chinese Media Network, co-founded by time viewer Markus Wanzeck, a panel discussion with Spiegel-Journalist Georg Fahrion in Berlin.

Fahrion was China correspondent for from August 2019 until the end of 2025. Spiegel in Beijing. Shortly after his return to Germany, he describes his perception of the social climate in China and gives his assessment of the country's social and political development.

The discussion will focus on the social mood in China. How is society dealing with the transition into an era where the People's Republic appears more powerful externally than ever before in its history, while internally needing to find a new direction after decades of rapid economic growth?

A few days after Chancellor Friedrich Merz's first visit to China and the National People's Congress, the discussion also offers an opportunity to assess the current state of German-Chinese relations. Fahrion will also speak about the still precarious working conditions for foreign journalists in China.

The discussion will be moderated by Leonardo Pape, a freelance editor at China.Table and board member of the German-Chinese Media Network.

The event will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 6 PM at the International Alumni Center (iac Berlin), Linienstraße 65a II, 10119 Berlin.
