Zeitenspiegel reporter Carsten Stormer traveled for the „NZZ Format“ series for Swiss television. SRF 1 into the former Kingdom of Mustang, a sanctuary of Tibetan culture on Nepalese soil.
4,000 meters high in the Himalayas lies the ancient kingdom of Mustang, encircled by insurmountable mountains. Centuries-old monasteries and temples form the foundation of a unique Tibetan culture on Nepalese soil – yet they gradually fell into disrepair in the harsh climate. Only a restoration of the monasteries in recent years has triggered a cultural renaissance.
Italian master conservator Luigi Fieni and his friend Tsewang Bista, the nephew of the last king of Mustang, travel for four weeks through the former kingdom of Mustang in northern Nepal. The two friends share a common mission: to preserve Mustang's culture for future generations. This is because neighboring China, above all, has the opposite interest and wants to prevent Mustang from serving as a refuge for Tibetan exiles.
Zeitenspiegel reporter Carsten Stormer accompanied the two for the TV documentary „The Forgotten Temples of Tibet – How Buddhism Returned to Mustang,“ which will air on Swiss television on January 9, 2025, as part of the „NZZ Format“ series. SRF 1 was broadcast online Swiss Radio and TelevisionMedia library is available.
