Twelve months, twelve countries, twelve reports

A year-long project, for which reporters from Zeitenspiegel researched across four continents, concluded this June. Together with the Frankfurter Rundschau Did you search for stories that tell „how education changes lives“ – the title of the project that was funded by the European Journalism Centre (EJC) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A programming project in Tanzania offering young women future prospects. A circus school as a refuge for Cambodian children. A former slave in Mauritania who has discovered education as the most effective weapon against oppression and bondage for himself and others. The twelve reports produced over the past year illuminate the topic of education in diverse ways.

What they all have in common is: They describe how education can pave the way to a better future. The hope, self-confidence, and unimagined strength that come with learning successes. They make an important, often decisive difference in life.

Sometimes hopes are also bitterly disappointed. In Afghanistan, the Zeitenspiegel team's research captured a snapshot at the end of a 20-year phase of freedom. A few weeks later, the Taliban took control of Kabul. Since then, most girls have been denied access to educational paths in the country.

The reportage series was coordinated by Tilman Wörtz (Zeitenspiegel) and Boris Halva.Frankfurter Rundschau).
