It has long since become a historical visual memory of the Federal Republic,\u201c stated Minister-President Malu Dreyer via video message at the festive award ceremony in Berlin. \u201eThe prize is a clear statement for freedom of opinion and the press,\u201c said State Secretary Heike Raab, who welcomed the invited guests at the State Representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zeitenspiegel.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2024-01-22-rueckblende-2023-preisverleihung-0773-online-kopie_low.jpg\" alt=\"Zeitenspiegel-Fotograf Rainer Kwiotek mitte\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring of 2023, Rainer Kwiotek traveled with Zeitenspiegel author Rike Uhlenkamp for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mutmagazin.de\"><em>Mom Magazine<\/em><\/a>  through Germany. Between Freiburg and Sankt Peter-Ording, Essen and Zittau, they met young people: the entire series comprises 17 impressive portraits and texts. The photographer had selected six for the application for the R\u00fcckblende award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the series, the jury said, Rainer Kwiotek photographically composed and technically perfect young people who are committed to society. Those who shape their future and stand against the right. This is particularly important in times like these. Because democracy thrives on participation and not on looking away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zeitenspiegel.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2024-01-22-rueckblende-2023-preisverleihung-1212-online_low.jpg\" alt=\"R\u00fcckblende-Preis f\u00fcr Rainer Kwiotek\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingrid M\u00fcller, member of the editorial board of the <em>Daily Mirror<\/em>, held the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/politik\/bitteres-jahr-2023-bilder-von-krieg-und-schock-aber-auch-von-mutigen-10883722.html\">Eulogy<\/a> on Rainer Kwiotek's series. In a stage conversation with M\u00fcller, reporters Uhlenkamp and Kwiotek reported how the conversations with young people, their commitment, their strength of opinion, and their unwillingness to conform, give them hope. \u201eTherefore, the award is also an award for our protagonists,\u201c says Rainer Kwiotek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the award for best photo series sponsored by Leica, the prize for best political cartoon, best single image, and the further photography prize \u201eSharp Vision\u201c were awarded in three other categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zeitenspiegel.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2024-01-22-rueckblende-2023-preisverleihung-1360-online_low.jpg\" alt=\"R\u00fcckblende-Preis f\u00fcr Rainer Kwiotek\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until February 13, the works of the winners will be shown in an exhibition of a total of 50 cartoons and 80 photographs and five series at the representation of Rhineland-Palatinate in Berlin. The jury selected them from over 1300 submissions.
