The story depicts the struggle of a young adult who was severely abused and neglected as an infant until the state took custody and entrusted him to a foster family. From the Award Jury's laudation: \u201eSensitively, clearly, and convincingly told \u2013 and free of prejudice from the victim's perspective.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It began over twelve years ago with a letter from a reader. Tom, 12, had been living with his foster family for eight years at the time. Jan R\u00fcbel had written a report about violence against children \u2013 and received a letter from Tom's foster father. He wrote: It was all much worse. Phone calls followed, and finally a visit to the Sauerland region. Jan R\u00fcbel published about this in 2008 in the <em>Strict<\/em> a first report: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeitenspiegel.de\/de\/projekte\/reportage\/toms-zweites-leben\/article\/\">\u201cTom's Second Life\u201d<\/a>. Over the years, he kept in touch, and then he and photographer Sascha Montag decided to visit Tom a second time: How is he doing today?
