Children's Aid Award for Montag and Rübel

The Time Mirror Sascha Montag and Jan Rübel have won this year's media award „Children's Rights in One World“ from Kindernothilfe: for the in Strict published report „A Wounded Life“. The story depicts the struggle of a young adult who was severely abused and neglected as an infant until the state took custody and entrusted him to a foster family. From the Award Jury's laudation: „Sensitively, clearly, and convincingly told – and free of prejudice from the victim's perspective.“

It began over twelve years ago with a letter from a reader. Tom, 12, had been living with his foster family for eight years at the time. Jan Rübel had written a report about violence against children – and received a letter from Tom's foster father. He wrote: It was all much worse. Phone calls followed, and finally a visit to the Sauerland region. Jan Rübel published about this in 2008 in the Strict a first report: “Tom's Second Life”. Over the years, he kept in touch, and then he and photographer Sascha Montag decided to visit Tom a second time: How is he doing today? How do the traces of early childhood trauma manifest themselves?

The presentation of the 22nd media award „Children's Rights in One World“ took place online for the first time on the evening of October 2, 2020:
