The Little Nuns of Nepal
Aired on Deutschlandfunk on January 30, 2023
Bernd HauserThere are many Ani Choying music videos on YouTube, and they have millions of views. In her home country of Nepal, the Buddhist nun is a celebrity. But she also has fans in Germany. The nun has used her concert earnings to build the Arya Tara School, a monastic school for girls aged six and up.
The Arya Tara School offers girls from poor families a chance at education. If they remained at home with their parents, they would still end up in early marriages as teenagers. So far, around 350 girls have attended the Arya Tara School. About half of the girls eventually shed their nun's robes over the years – but by then they are equipped with a good education that allows them to lead self-determined lives.
The radio report was broadcast on January 30, 2023, on Deutschlandfunk sent. She can here listened to and downloaded.
